The City of Berkeley is currently in the process of creating complete streets redesigns for streets on the Southside of the UC Berkeley campus. The streets in question are Telegraph, Bancroft, Dana, and Fulton. The city is proposing bus lanes along with protected cycletrack, and we need to fight to make sure that planners follow through and put the interests of transit riders, cyclists, and pedestrians first.
On Bancroft, the option that best prioritizes transit speed and reliability in addition to the safety of cyclists and pedestrians is Option 2. This option includes a two-way cycle track on the north side of Bancroft, in addition to a bus lane along the full length of College to Shattuck. Ensuring that there is a bus lane along the full length of Bancroft is a top priority for EBTRU.
A strong coalition of UC Berkeley students and community members has come together as a new group called Telegraph for People, fighting for a fully car-free Telegraph near campus. With the second-highest pedestrian volumes in the entire East Bay, Telegraph is ripe for a makeover that puts pedestrians first.
Get involved now by filling out the Southside Complete Streets survey and voting for Option 4 on Telegraph and Option 2 on Bancroft.
